I know, I know, we hear it all the time, personal training isn’t rocket science. Most people think of us as some archetype 80’s cliché in an all out spandex neon onesy. (by the way, last time I checked, exercise is all about biomechanics at it’s core, which is based on physics, which is the same science that people use to fly rockets and shit) SO HA!
Seriously though, us trainers get no respect, and not because we are bad people, but because we don’t demand the respect we deserve! And why not!?!? I suspect most of us just don’t realize how powerful we truly are, and what a dramatic effect we can have on our clients on a spiritual, intellectual, AND physical level.
Yes, trainers stimulate brains. And not just in a “oh, that was interesting, I didn’t realize I could stand on one leg, do a dumbbell overhead press and sing the national anthem backwards” kind of way.
I am talking about NEUROGENESIS!
I am talking about creating new brain cells and pathways in the brain!
I am talking about creating the physical structure of the brain!
I am talking about helping your clients determine their very own destiny people! Come on!
Holy shit right!?!?
What exactly does this mean?
This means our jobs aren’t just limited to helping people lose 10 lbs for the wedding. Who cares about a photo album anyway, I am talking about helping people live the life of their dreams through fitness, not looking like they are having the life of their dreams for a single moment.
For a more thorough answer, I suggest you pick up 2 books in particular, and fast!
The first is called Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain
&
The second is called Molecules of Emotion; The Science Behind Mind-Body Medicine.
Read these books and leave me some comments, I know you will be stimulated to look at your job in a very profound way.
Thanks.

Hi Jon,
The real people that understand this are the people that come to a personal trainer for real help and understand these two things. You are helping your body but also helping your brain with the knowledge a trainer gives, also the feel good hormones that are released during the workout. The people that don’t think two and two don’t work together should read about it and become more informed about how the brain and body works.
Thanks for writing, I very much liked your newest post. I think you should post more frequently, you evidently have natural ability for blogging!
