What Kind of Money Can a Personal Trainer Make and Does it Have to Be So Inconsistent?

This is an excellent question, and the answer varies on your skill level, where you live, and how good you are at marketing yourself.  The best marketing is word of mouth fitness marketing which basically means you deliver people results, and then your clients do the marketing for you (with a little help from you!) personal trainer money Remember, this graphic uses data for the United States only, and is from 2006!  With the increase in obesity & awareness of the importance of health/fitness, the # of trainers and how much they get paid will continue to sky rocket, especially for those that can deliver results.  There is a reason why the graph at the bottom of the picture is shooting upward.

Fitness Entrepreneurs Are Killing It!

Keep in mind, the most successful personal trainers, the ones who make consistently good money, tend to be the more entrepreneurial ones: they start their own fitness business or bootcamp, create more than one revenue stream, and find ways to provide value that is not only tied to their time.  Even the census data states that the statistics in the graph DO NOT account for self-employed fitness professionals. Employment of fitness workers is expected to increase 27 percent over the 2006-2016 decade, much faster than the average  for all occupations! This doesn't mean you should run out and start a gym or a boot camp, most trainers start part time and get the experience they need to be successful in a gym first, where they don't have to worry as much about how to get exposure to new clients.  But if you want to make the real money, you will need to become a self-employed fitness professional.

How Do I Keep Track of My Client Info & Personal Training Rate?

Personal Training Business SoftwareMany trainers grandfather existing clients into pay increases; in other words, as a show of loyalty, they may only raise an existing clients rate by $5, but will raise it $10 for any brand new fitness clients coming into their business.  This is fair, but it can get confusing keeping track of that information.  Check out this free personal training business software that allows you to keep track or your rates, client info, continuing education, and more!
