Well, there are plenty of people, businesses, and whole industries who profit from making people diseased and miserable.  Many personal trainers are feeling a call to arms these days.&nbsp; We want to help more people and be more influential, work in the communities, empower people and protect our most vulnerable populations, like children who are becoming obese in record numbers.&nbsp; We want to take on these bad guys, and start fighting back.&nbsp; Because...</p><br />
<h2><span style="color: #0000ff;">Quite Simply, We Are in the Midst of a Lifestyle War.</span></h2><br />
<p>One side wants us to be lazy, look for quick fixes, find solutions outside of ourselves, and be dependent on others for health and happiness.&nbsp; (Fast food companies, drug companies, health insurance companies.)&nbsp; And they have tremendous resources and utilize them to the fullest capacity in this war.&nbsp; They do anything to keep you fat and stupid, even create ridiculous sandwiches.  <a href="http://personaltrainingbusiness.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/burger-melt.bmp"><img width="580" height="335" alt="burger melt" src="http://personaltrainingbusiness.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/burger-melt.bmp" title="burger melt!" class="size-full wp-image-2116" /></a></p><br />

<h2><span style="color: #0000ff;">Think I'm Exaggerating? </span></h2><br />
<p>I am not.&nbsp; One recent study found that several of the largest health insurance companies reinvested their profits into fast food companies, to the tune of HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of dollars.  These companies want you to be sick!&nbsp; And your clients.&nbsp; And your friends.&nbsp; And your family. They make money getting you sick by selling you processed edible poison (fast &quot;food&quot;), and then they make money feeding you medication.  And guess what, they are winning the war.&nbsp; In fact, they are creaming us.&nbsp; In 1991, the fattest state was Mississippi, with an obesity rate of 15.7%.&nbsp; But that is better than our THINNEST state today in 2010, Colorado, which has an obesity rate of 19.1%.</p><br />

<p>On the other side, there are people like us.&nbsp; Fitness professionals, personal trainers, boot camp owners, etc, who try and help people one at a time as best we can.&nbsp; Empowering them, getting them to think and act for long term reasons, teaching them how to take control of their health and fitness, how to be more independent, eat healthy, and ultimately, be happier.  If we work together as a community, we can take on the bad guys and win.&nbsp; But we have to get organized, work smarter, and expand our ability to influence, empower, and inspire people to a healthy lifestyle.&nbsp; This is part of the reason I created the &quot;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=251269955299&amp;ref=ts">Association of Elite Fitness Professionals</a>&quot;. How many times have you heard a client say something like this?<br />
<br />
Seriously, how many times have you heard that this month even?<br />
<br />
And even more importantly, how do you respond?  Do you accept these excuses?  Do you just let it slide?  Do you politely disagree?  Do you validate their excuses!?!<br />
<br />

<h2><span style="color: #0000ff;">Use Written Policy to Set the Tone, Be a Leader, &amp; Destroy Excuses/Negativity</span><strong><br />
</strong></h2><br />
All my clients have to sign an "Accountability Agreement" that outlines the personal training policy of my business.  By having it written, it show them that I am professional, and committed to a certain way of running my business.  By showing it to them before they buy a package, I not only am differentiating myself from other trainer, but also creating clear expectations, so they know exactly what they are in for.<br />
<br />
(It is a tremendous sales tool for that reason, and I will send you a copy of the agreement I use in my business if you put your name and email in the box to the right at the top of the page, it is part of my business booster kit.)<br />
<br />
One of the policies is "No negative self-talk and lame excuses  in the gym".  If you let your clients focus on problems and negativity, they will not succeed, will not be fun to work with, will end up quitting,  and you will have to find a new client.  By making this clear from the beginning of the relationship, and then enforcing the rule (not like a jerk, but politely), you can create a positive and supportive environment relationship, without letting them undermine their own efforts.<br />
<br />
Don't get me wrong.  We are not licensed psychologists.  And they can still self-sabotage with their thoughts and actions outside of the gym.<br />
<br />
That is not the point.<br />
<br />
The point is that when they are in the gym, they are following your leadership, and you make the rules, especially if they help empower the client.  If they can start to master their thoughts and actions there, it will spread to every other aspect of their life outside of the gym.<br />
<br />
That is the power of personal training policy :-)<br />
<h2><span style="color: #0000ff;">Exceed their Expectations &amp; Help the Client Shift Focus</span><strong><br />
</strong></h2><br />
Of course, people have more health issues as they get older.<br />
<br />
But you reap what you sow, just look at Jack Lalanne.<br />
<br />
And remember the difference between causation and correlation.  Sure, studies show people lose muscle mass as they get older.  But old does not equal unfit.  The issue is that people become more sedentary as they get older!  You can't keep muscle if you don't use it!  So MOVE IT OR LOSE IT!<br />
<br />
One way to over deliver and exceed the clients expectations is to not only help them shift their focus from something powerless (i can't help it, I am too old) to something powerful (I reap what I sow) by providing tools and video that are fun to watch to help inspire them and confront their inaccurate assumptions and excuses.<br />
<br />
You can educate and inspire them while entertaining them.<br />
<br />
And when you do it "on your own time", in other words, when you are not in the gym, it will show them you really care.<br />
<br />
For instance, watch this video, and send it to any clients who could use inspiration, and send it out every time you here someone blame their age!<br />

<h2><span style="color: #0000ff;">Call Your Client Out on The Lies They Tell Themselves!</span></h2><br />
One of the most satisfying things is helping clients get in the best shape of their life.  One of my clients is 49 years old, and is bench pressing more than when he was in the "best" shape in college.  And yet, the other day he tried to tell me "but I can't lose this weight because of my age".  I called him on it!<br />
<br />
Really, you think you can get stronger than ever, but not leaner than ever?  How does that work?  Your body only lets you adapt one way but not another.  That is how persistent this lie is!  Even someone who has seen proof that it is not true, will still lie to themselves and blame their age.  But they can't lie to me.  My job is to hold up the mirror of truth.<br />
<br />
And so is yours :-)<br />

If you want to build your personal training business and fitness career fast, you have to <strong>l</strong><strong>earn from the *best*</strong> and do what they do.  It is really that simple.<br />
<br />
Of course, certifications are important, but if you REALLY want to jump start your personal training business, you need to get hands on experience with the top trainers out there.<br />
<br />
Joe is at the very top of the personal training industry, and I am lucky enough to have him as a friend, colleague, and mentor.<br />
<ul><br />
	<li>His client list includes <strong>celebrities</strong>, such as Claire Danes, John Leguizamo, Gerard Butler, Eva Mendes, Natasha Bedingfield,  and Anne Hathaway, among others.</li><br />
	<li>His articles have been published in "Men's Health", "Muscle &amp; Fitness", "Women's Health", "Shape"  "Allure", "Marie Claire", and "Cosmopolitan".</li><br />
	<li>He writes a fitness blog for AOL's "That's Fit", some of which get hundreds of thousands of hits!</li><br />
	<li>He has completed many advanced certifications and mentorship programs, and serves as a Scientific Advisory Board Member for "Fitness" Magazine.</li><br />
	<li>He also trains <strong>Pro Athletes</strong>, including some of the Indiana Pacers, and world class jujitsu fighter Vitor Shaolin.</li><br />
	<li>He owns a personal training only gym, Peak Performance,  which was recently voted one of the<strong> top ten gyms in the country by "Men's Health" Magazine!</strong></li><br />

<div class="mceTemp mceIEcenter">So whether you are a personal trainer looking to build a super successful studio or gym, or want to train elite athletes, or publish a book, or just want better clients, there is a lot to be learned from the interview below.</div><br />
<p style="text-align: center;">&nbsp;</p><br />

<br />
1)      <strong> When working with your personal training clients, how can you tell if a client is really ready to change their behavior and life for good?</strong><br />
<ul><br />
	<li>Well fortunately, I’m at a point in my career where I’m very blunt (but nice) in the initial client interview process.</li><br />
	<li>Basically, I tell them that if they want to work with me I have certain parameters that they need to follow.</li><br />
	<li>First, they need to go see Dr. Brooke Kalanick in order to get their current nutrition program evaluated and altered if necessary. In addition, Dr. Brooke will assess whether or not they have any specific hormonal issues that need to be addressed.</li><br />
	<li>Second, they must be willing to commit to the program, if not then I’ll recommend another trainer.</li><br />
	<li>Third, they must be willing to give me a 100% during their sessions and keep to a regular schedule.</li><br />
	<li>Finally, I let them know about my cancellation policy.</li><br />
</ul><br />
2)      <strong> You are a tremendous success, probably in the top .01% of personal trainers worldwide.  Is there a big secret to your success?  Something you do differently?</strong><br />
<ul><br />
	<li>I never lose focus. My drive to succeed is endless. I was fortunate enough to be raised by parents that instilled a tremendous work ethic in me.</li><br />
	<li>My Dad was a successful entrepreneur and I got to see firsthand what it took on a daily basis to be successful.</li><br />
	<li>I got to see the sacrifices that are sometimes necessary to make in order to be successful.</li><br />
	<li>I also learned how important it is to surround myself with a great team of people. I can’t do everything and I can’t be everywhere at once so I need to be able to trust my staff and know that we all have the same desire to make Peak the best place to train.</li><br />
</ul><br />
3)       <strong>What are the top 1 or 2 things that trainers are NOT doing which they should be; things which will help them get better results with their clients?</strong><br />
<ul><br />
	<li>First of all, many trainers don’t place a high enough value on continuing education. They get caught up in the cost of a seminar or a mentorship and lose sight that knowledge is power. The more knowledgeable you acquire, the more information you have at your disposal, which will allow you to design more effective training programs, which will ultimately give your clients the results that they desire.  When your clients continue to get results, the demand for your services will rise and so will your fees.</li><br />
	<li>Secondly, I also think it’s important that a trainer look like a trainer. Trainers should be fit. They don’t have to be walking around at 6% body fat, but they should definitely look like they train. It’s important to know your clientele. If clients are coming to you because you are supposed to be a fat loss expert, well than look the part. I don’t care how smart you are, if you are calling yourself a fat loss expert and you are walking around at 15-20% body fat as guy or 20-24% body fat as a woman, you should probably start applying some of your knowledge on yourself.</li><br />
</ul><br />
4)      <strong> Your commitment to continuing education is very impressive.  What is your personal philosophy when it comes to trying new certifications or evaluating potential educational opportunities?</strong><br />
<ul><br />
	<li>In the beginning, I tried to find out who the industry leaders were and then I made it a point to go spend time with each of them.</li><br />
	<li>I would also ask them for 2 or 3 names of other individuals that they would highly recommend that I learn from.</li><br />
	<li>I’m a big believer in attending 3-5 day internship/mentorship programs as opposed to weekend conferences with 30 different presenters. In the early stages of one’s training career, those weekend conferences are really great because they can give you an opportunity to see which presenters you’d like to go and spend more time learning from.</li><br />
</ul><br />
<p style="text-align: center;">5)       <strong>So many trainers are too quick to try and write a book, e-book, or create an info product online.  How do you know the time is right?  You have had the expertise to write a book for years now, were you waiting for a reason and what should trainers know about the publishing industry?</strong></p><br />
<br />
<ul><br />
	<li>Wow, that’s a huge pet peeve of mine. With growth of the internet, anyone and their mother can be an internet expert. There’s no regulation or accountability with those products as there is no standard that the creator needs to be held accountable to.</li><br />
	<li>Often times with these products, you’ll also see the same few names endorsing the product as the next greatest discovery in the world of training. How can the next greatest program or concept come out every single week or month?</li><br />
	<li>Don’t get me wrong, there are some excellent e-books and DVD’s out there, but you really need to do your research as to who is putting these products out.<br />
<ul><br />
	<li>What’s their background?</li><br />
	<li>Who have they trained?</li><br />
	<li>What’s their reputation for producing results with their clients or athletes?</li><br />
	<li>What reputable, major fitness publications are seeking them out for training information?</li><br />
	<li>How do other industry leaders view them?</li><br />
</ul><br />
</li><br />
	<li>Finally, the biggest difference when you publish a book through a major publisher is that you are held accountable by the publisher, your editor, the fact checkers, the research checkers, etc. as they are constantly scrutinizing your material.</li><br />
	<li>As for why I waited so long to write my first book, I wanted to make sure that my book would truly have something to offer both the general fitness population as well as the fitness professional.</li><br />
</ul><br />

To be truly successful as a trainer with your clients, you need to find out their "REASON WHY?"  What makes them tick, what are they passionate about, what are their darkest fears, and how can you help them understand the connection between these emotional goals and exercise.<br />

When you connect the client's  workouts to their reason "why", the client:<br />
<ul><br />
	<li> becomes empowered</li><br />
	<li>gets accountable</li><br />
	<li>stays motivated</li><br />
	<li>experiences  real results that last!</li><br />
</ul><br />
<h2 style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #0000ff;">What is Your Reason "Why" ???</span></h2><br />
BUT EQUALLY IMPORTANT is for you to connect with *your own reason why?*<br />
<br />
Why do you want to be a personal trainer?  Why do you want to be successful?  What will you do with your freedom and success, that you can not do now?  What passions will you pursue, who will you be?<br />
<br />
When you connect with your own reason why, everything you do in your personal training business takes on a new sense of important and urgency, without the urgency feeling stressful.  Almost like you are working for a higher purpose, something greater than just yourself.<br />
<br />
So what is your reason "WHY"?<br />
<br />
One of my own personal "reasons why"  is snowboarding.<br />

Having the freedom and financial resources to travel to some of the most beautiful places in the world, strap of sheet of fiber glass to my feet, and literally fly through the air REALLY motivates me.  It pushes me to be better in my personal training business, to train harder in the gym so I can perform better on the mountain, and to be the best that I can be.<br />
<br />
But most importantly, write out what your reason why is on a piece of paper, and update it occasionally.<br />
